Commanders Comments August 2008
Here is our first official Camp 507 newsletter. Looking back on the last year since we actually got this camp off the ground and running again. I see a lot of great opportunities to recruit, raise awareness of our camps activities, and raise funds that we’ve missed. Here are some of the upcoming events.
Fall Horseshoe Tournament
The folks at the Memorial Home have suggested that we have another horseshoe tournament tournament and Bar B-Q in September. The date we decided on was Sept. 27th. Last time we raised quite a nice sum after all our bills were paid.
Sum-Nelly
I’ve contacted the Summerville Recreation Dept. about our camp being involved in Sum-Nelly this year. My thoughts are that we could use this opportunity to recruit, sell some prints and flags, and maybe some Brunswick Stew or Bar B-Q. It will be held on October 4th .
Christmas Parade
The Summerville Christmas Parade should be early in December this year. When we donated $200.00 to the “Santa in Uniform” project sponsored by the Summerville P.D. last year, we were told we could be in the Christmas parade and they would wave the entry fee since we, as an organization, help those less fortunate. I don’t know where we would be in the line but if your interested in being in the parade, lets talk about it in the next meeting.
Christmas in the Park
I’ve contacted the Summerville City Manager about their planning for this event. They start planning 100 days in advance. I’ve requested a more centralized location, maybe one of the big bon-fire areas. He in turn requested a rifle drill demonstration with firing. The only hitch to a more central location is they will want us both Friday and Saturday nights. Plan early to make this a success.
Other Camp News
The Menlo pre-4th of July parade was a great success. Those who were there seemed to enjoy it a great deal.
We purchased three boxes of the Southern crosses of Honor at $120.00. Dale and Stan were able to get these out at four cemeteries. They look really impressive.
Dale met with David Fowler from the Fort Attaway Preservation Project who has said he will donate some granite for our Battle of Trion Factory monument project. He and his wife Cailee were kind enough to show Dale around the old earth work fortress that was Fort Attaway. Dale commented that it was truly impressive what our ancestors were able to accomplish.
Camp 507 would like to welcome back Dr. Dale Willingham. It’s good to have you back.
Remember that above all else we need to recruit, recruit, recruit !
Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be Thursday, August 28th at the Trion Community Center at 7.00 pm.
