Captain, March 17, 1862. Promoted to Lt. Col. March 17, 1862. Wounded at Ellisons Mill, Va. June 26th 1862. Colonel June 26, 1862. Resigned due to injuries May 26th, 1863. Died in Gainesville, Ga. Sept. 16, 1903. Buried in Palo Alto cemetery in Gainesville.
General James Longstreet, in his memoir 'From Manassas to Appomattox' metions J. B. Estes regarding the fighting around Mechanicsville and Ellisons Mill: "General D.H. Hill reported of his Forty-fourth Georgia Regiment, the lieutenant-colonel Estes (J.B.), wounded, and others, aggregating 334 killed and wounded." (Longstreet, 1895, J.B. Lippincott Co. Philadelphia, PA. Da Capo Press edition, 1992. pg. 125) The units Colonel was killed at this battle.
