Frizzell McTyeirie Hardwick, farmer, mercantile owner, soldier, and legislative representative from Cherokee County, Alabama, was born in Morgan County, Georgia on July 18,1806, the son of George Hardwick (1766-1824) and Mary “Polly” McTyeirie.
Frizzell was named after his grandfather Frizzell McTyeirie (1734-1823) who was a Revolutionary War soldier from Virginia who later lived in Fairfield District, South Carolina and Augusta, Georgia. Frizzell married Sarah Bailey, daughter of John Bailey and Mary Smith on July 27, 1827 in Morgan County, Georgia where they made their home. In 1838, Frizzell and Sarah moved from Morgan County, Georgia to Cherokee County, Alabama.
Frizzell was Circuit Clerk for Cherokee County, Alabama about 1840. He served in the Alabama Legislature as a Representive from Cherokee County from 1845 to 1850. He was also Senator from 1859-1864. As an influential farmer and businessman, he was one of the incorporators of the Alabama Steamboat Planters Company in 1858. Among his many achievements, he was a founder, active member, and Deacon of the Cedar Bluff Baptist Church, organized in 1849.
Frizzell enlisted at Ashville, Alabama in 1861 and served with the rank of Colonel in the 19th Alabama Infantry, C.S.A. Seven of his sons served in the C.S.A. from Alabama and Arkansas, and three were killed while serving the Confederacy during the War Between the States. His son, John Bailey Hardwick, was wounded several times.
Frizzell died on November 19, 1869 in Cherokee County, and is buried in the Cedar Bluff Cemetery in Cedar Bluff, Alabama.
